Understanding Teen Mental Health

Being a teen can be exciting, confusing, stressful, and fun. Sometimes all of those feelings happen in the same day.

Your mind and body are changing. School can feel stressful. Friendships can change. Family life may be hard at times. You may also feel pressure about your future.

Understanding teen mental health can help you make sense of these feelings. It can also help you know when it is time to ask for support.

What Is Teen Mental Health?

Mental health is about how you think, feel, and handle everyday life.

Everyone has mental health, just like everyone has physical health.

Some days you may feel happy and strong. Other days you may feel worried, angry, sad, or tired.

Having a hard day does not mean something is wrong with you.

Feelings can change.

Many Things Can Affect How You Feel

Teen life comes with a lot of change.

Schoolwork and tests can cause stress. Friendships and peer pressure can be hard. Problems at home can affect you too.

Social media may also create pressure. It can make it easy to compare your life with someone else’s.

Loss, bullying, trauma, or other hard events can also affect how you feel.

You do not have to handle these things alone.

Big Feelings Are Normal

Teens can have strong emotions.

You may feel happy one minute and upset the next. & You may worry about things that never bothered you before.

You may also question who you are or what you want for your future.

That is okay.

You are still learning about yourself.

Take Care of Your Mind

Small things can help your mental health.

Try to get enough sleep. Eat regular meals and drink water.

Move your body in ways you enjoy.

Spend time doing things that make you feel calm or happy. Listen to music. Write. Draw. Go outside. Take a break from your phone.

Most of all, talk about how you feel.

Talk to Someone You Trust

You do not need to wait until things feel terrible before asking for help.

Talk to a parent, caregiver, teacher, coach, counselor, or another adult you trust.

You can also talk with a friend.

You do not need the perfect words.

&

You can simply say, “I’ve been having a hard time lately.”

That is enough to start.

Know When You May Need More Support

Everyone has difficult days. But sometimes hard feelings stay for a long time.

You may stop enjoying things you once loved. You may pull away from friends or family.

Your sleep or eating habits may change. School may become harder. You may feel worried, angry, empty, or hopeless often.

These changes are worth talking about.

Getting help early can make things easier.

When Things Feel Too Heavy

Sometimes emotional pain can become very strong.

You may feel like you cannot get through the day. You may feel unsafe or think about hurting yourself or dying.

Do not keep those thoughts to yourself.

Tell a trusted adult right away.

Asking for help is a brave choice.

Be Kind to Yourself

You are still growing.

You will make mistakes. Will have bad days. Will not always know what to do.

That is part of being human.

Talk to yourself with the same kindness you would give a friend.

Celebrate small wins too. Progress does not have to be huge to matter.

You Are Not Alone

Many teens struggle with their mental health.

Talking about it can help.

There are people who want to listen and help you through difficult days.

Your feelings matter. Your story matters. You matter.

Take care of your mind. Ask for help when you need it. Keep going one day at a time.

You are growing. You are learning. And you do not have to do it alone.
