Cancer can become a big part of life. There may be doctor visits, treatments, tests, and long days. But cancer is not everything you are.
Living Beyond a Cancer Diagnosis means remembering that you are still you. You still have things you love. Still have dreams. You still have people who care about you. Most of all, you still have a future.
Cancer may be part of your story, but it does not get to write every page.
You Are More Than Cancer
A diagnosis is something that happened to you. It is not who you are.
You are still a kid.
Can laugh.
You can play.
You can learn.
Can create.
You can dream about what you want to do someday.
Some days may be hard. That does not change who you are.
It Is Okay to Have Good Days and Bad Days
You do not have to feel brave all the time.
You may feel happy one day and scared the next. May feel angry about treatment. You may feel tired of talking about cancer. You may even have days when you do not want to think about it at all.
That is okay.
Talk with someone you trust when your feelings get too big to carry alone.
Focus on What Brings You Joy
Cancer can take up a lot of time. Make room for things that make you smile too.
Listen to music.
Draw or create something.
Watch something funny.
Play a game.
Spend time with friends.
Go outside when you can.
Joy does not mean you are ignoring what is happening. Joy is still an important part of your life.
Take Care of You
Your body is doing hard work.
Eat when you can. Drink water. Get the rest your body needs. Follow the plan your care team made for you.
Your feelings need care too.
Take slow breaths when you feel worried. Write down your thoughts. Talk to someone. Ask questions when you do not understand something.
Taking care of yourself matters.
Build Your Support Circle
You do not have to do this alone.
Your support circle may include:
- Parents or caregivers
- Brothers and sisters
- Friends
- Doctors and nurses
- Teachers
- Counselors
- Other kids who have faced cancer
Tell people when you need help.
You can also tell them when you just want someone to listen.
Keep Hope Alive
Hope can look different every day.
Sometimes hope is a big dream about your future.
Sometimes it is looking forward to seeing a friend.
It is getting through treatment today.
Sometimes hope is simply believing tomorrow could be better.
All of those kinds of hope matter.
Look Toward Your Future
You have more chapters ahead.
Think about what you would like to do.
Maybe you want to travel.
Learn something new.
Play a sport.
Make art.
Help animals.
Go to college.
Start a career.
Or maybe you have no idea yet.
That is okay too.
You have time to discover who you want to become.
Support for Families
Parents and caregivers may need support too.
Watching a child face cancer can bring fear, stress, sadness, and many questions. It is important for caregivers to rest, talk about their feelings, and accept help from others.
Families do not have to be strong every minute.
You can face the hard days together.
Living Beyond the Diagnosis
Living Beyond a Cancer Diagnosis does not mean pretending cancer is not there.
It means making room for the rest of life too.
Friendship.
Family.
Fun.
Dreams.
School.
Birthdays.
Laughter.
Hope.
You are more than your diagnosis.
You are more than treatment.
Are still becoming who you are meant to be.
Keep believing.
Dreaming.
Keep living.
