Pregnancy & Mental Health

Pregnancy can bring joy, hope, and excitement. However, it can also bring stress, fear, and worry. Your body is changing. Your life is changing too. Because of this, your feelings may change from day to day.

You are not alone.

Your mental health matters during pregnancy. Asking for help is a sign of strength.

Emotional Changes During Pregnancy

Many feelings can come with pregnancy. Some days may feel exciting. Other days may feel hard.

You may notice:

  • Mood swings
  • Worry or anxiety
  • Low energy
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Self-doubt
  • Fear about birth
  • Worry about parenting
  • Trouble sleeping

These feelings are common. Still, you do not have to face them alone.

Why Mental Health Matters

Your emotional health is an important part of your care.

When you care for your mind, you also care for your body. Good mental health can help you manage stress. It can also help with sleep, daily routines, and relationships.

Most of all, you deserve support during this major life change.

Talk About How You Feel

You do not have to hide hard feelings.

Talk with someone you trust. This may be your partner, a friend, a family member, or a member of your care team.

You can share the good days and the hard days.

Sometimes, simply saying “I’m having a hard day” can be a good first step.

Create a Simple Routine

A daily routine may help life feel less stressful.

Try to wake up and go to bed around the same time. Eat regular meals. Make time for rest.

However, your routine does not need to be perfect.

Do what works for you and your body.

Move Your Body

Gentle movement may help your mood and energy.

For example, you may enjoy walking, stretching, or another activity approved by your health care provider.

Listen to your body. Rest when you need to.

Eat and Rest

Your body is doing a lot of work.

Try to eat regular, nourishing meals. Drink enough water. Also, make sleep and rest a priority when you can.

You do not have to earn rest.

Rest is part of taking care of yourself.

Stay Connected

Support can make a big difference.

Spend time with people who make you feel safe and cared for. Talk with other parents if that feels helpful. You may also want to join a pregnancy or parent support group.

You were never meant to do everything alone.

Make Time for Yourself

Pregnancy can become the focus of daily life. Still, you matter as a person too.

Read. Journal. Listen to music. Spend time outside. Take a warm shower. Practice slow breathing. Do something creative.

Small moments of calm can help.

When Things Feel Harder

Pay attention when emotional changes begin to affect daily life.

You may notice deep sadness, strong anxiety, hopelessness, extreme fatigue, major sleep changes, or loss of interest in things you once enjoyed.

You may also begin to pull away from other people.

Do not ignore these signs.

Talk with your health care provider. You can also reach out to a mental health professional for support.

Ask for Professional Support

You do not need to wait until things become unbearable before asking for help.

Therapists, counselors, doctors, nurses, midwives, and other health care providers can help.

Tell them what you are feeling. Be open about how long it has been happening and how it affects your life.

Help is available.

Give Yourself Grace

You do not have to enjoy every moment of pregnancy.

You do not have to feel happy all the time.

and

You do not have to be perfect.

Some days will be easier than others. Therefore, take things one day at a time.

You matter. Your feelings matter. Your mental health matters.

You Are Not Alone

Pregnancy is a major change. It is okay to need help along the way.

Lean on the people who care about you. Take breaks. Ask questions. Rest when you need to.

Most importantly, speak up when you are struggling.

You are strong. Are growing. Are enough. & You are loved.
