Substance Use and Suicide | Warning Signs & Help

Substance use and suicide can be closely linked. Alcohol and drugs can change how a person thinks, feels, and acts. They can also make it harder to deal with stress, pain, or strong emotions.

For some people, substance use can make depression or anxiety worse. It may also lead to poor choices or unsafe actions.

There is help. There is hope. Recovery is possible.

Know the Warning Signs

Warning signs can look different for each person.

Someone may talk about wanting to die or feeling like there is no way out. They may pull away from family and friends. Their sleep or mood may change. They may also begin using more alcohol or drugs.

Take these signs seriously.

If you are worried about someone, reach out. Ask how they are doing. Listen to what they say. Most of all, remind them that they do not have to face this alone.

Support Can Help

Kind words can make a difference.

You can say, “I am here for you.” You can listen without blame or shame. & You can also help the person find support.

Avoid saying things like “just stop” or “get over it.” Substance use and mental health struggles are complex. Support, care, and treatment can help.

Take One Step Today
