Healing After a Near Miss

A near miss can change you. One second can change everything. Even when everyone goes home, the call may stay with you.

Healing after a near miss takes time. You may feel scared, angry, or confused. May replay the call in your mind. You may wonder what could have happened. These feelings are common. They are also normal.

The After the Call ecosystem was created for first responders. It provides simple tools for stress, trauma, and recovery. It also reminds you that you do not have to face these thoughts alone.

After a near miss, your body may stay on high alert. You may have trouble sleeping. You may feel jumpy or tired. Because of this, self-care matters. Good sleep, healthy food, exercise, and time with people you trust can help your body recover.

It also helps to talk about the call. Speak with a trusted coworker, peer supporter, chaplain, or counselor. Sharing your story does not make you weak. It helps you heal.

Most of all, give yourself time. Healing after a near miss does not happen in one day. Small steps matter. One conversation matters. One healthy choice matters. Hope grows one day at a time.
