Making Friends for Kids | Friendship, Kindness & Social Skills

Making a new friend can feel exciting. It can also feel a little scary.

You may wonder what to say. May feel shy. May worry that someone will not want to play with you.

That is okay.

Making friends for kids is something you can learn and practice. You do not have to be the loudest person in the room. You just need to start with small steps.

Start With a Hello

A friendship can start with one small word.

“Hi!”

You can smile, wave, or say hello to someone.

You do not need to have a big talk right away.

Start small. Give yourself time.

Ask a Question

Questions are a great way to start talking.

You could ask:

“What is your favorite game?”

“Do you like soccer?”

“What are you drawing?”

“Do you want to play?”

Then listen to the answer.

Good friends listen to each other.

Find Things You Both Like

It can be easier to make friends when you have something in common.

Maybe you both like animals.

You love the same game.

Maybe you enjoy drawing, reading, sports, music, or playing outside.

Shared interests give you something fun to talk about and do together.

Invite Someone to Join You

Sometimes another child may be waiting for someone to ask them to play.

You can be that person.

Try saying:

“Do you want to play with us?”

“Want to sit with me?”

“Do you want to do this together?”

Including someone can make them feel welcome.

It may even be the beginning of a new friendship.

Be a Good Friend

Making a friend is only the beginning.

Good friends try to treat each other well.

Be kind.

Take turns.

Share when you can.

Tell the truth.

Listen.

Say sorry when you make a mistake.

Cheer for your friends when something good happens.
