Anticipatory Grief in Pediatric Cancer

Finding Strength, Hope, and Support Before a Loss

Anticipatory Grief in Pediatric Cancer

When a child has cancer, families often begin grieving long before a loss occurs.

Every appointment brings new emotions.

Every test brings new questions.

Sometimes, hope and fear exist at the same time.

This is called anticipatory grief.

Although your child is still with you, you may already be grieving the future you imagined.

These feelings are normal.

Most importantly, you do not have to face them alone.

Our Foundation created this resource to help parents, siblings, grandparents, and caregivers better understand anticipatory grief while finding strength, hope, and support throughout the journey.

What Is Anticipatory Grief?

Anticipatory grief is the sadness, fear, and uncertainty that can begin before a loss happens.

It often starts after a serious diagnosis.

Then, it may grow as treatments continue.

Families often feel caught between hope and heartbreak.

However, both feelings can exist together.

Loving your child and fearing the future can happen at the same time.

Common Feelings

Every family experiences anticipatory grief differently.

However, many parents and caregivers experience similar emotions.

You may feel:

  • Fear
  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Guilt
  • Worry
  • Exhaustion
  • Loneliness
  • Helplessness
  • Hope
  • Uncertainty

Sometimes, these emotions change from one hour to the next.

That is normal.

Caring for Yourself

Parents often focus on everyone else.

However, your well-being matters too.

Try to:

  • Eat when you can.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Rest whenever possible.
  • Accept help from family and friends.
  • Take short walks.
  • Spend a few quiet moments outside.
  • Talk with someone you trust.

Most importantly, remember that caring for yourself also helps you care for your child.

Supporting Brothers and Sisters

Cancer affects the whole family.

Therefore, brothers and sisters also need love, attention, and reassurance.

Encourage them to:

  • Ask questions.
  • Share their feelings.
  • Spend time with friends.
  • Continue favorite activities.
  • Talk with trusted adults.

Keeping routines as normal as possible can help children feel safe.

Finding Moments of Joy

Cancer changes life.

Even so, joyful moments still matter.

Laugh together.

Read stories.

Play games.

Celebrate birthdays.

Take pictures.

Create memories whenever you can.

Those moments often become treasured gifts for the future.

When the Future Feels Uncertain

No one knows what tomorrow will bring.

Nevertheless, today still matters.

Focus on one day at a time.

Celebrate small victories.

Allow yourself to hope.

At the same time, allow yourself to grieve.

Both are part of loving someone deeply.

You Are Not Alone

Many families walk this path.

However, no family should have to walk it alone.

Lean on your care team.

Accept support from loved ones.

Connect with other families who understand.

Hope can exist alongside grief.

Love remains present through every step of the journey.
